Winter: Big Waves & Legendary Competitions
From November through March, powerful northwest swells transform Mākaha Beach into one of the most iconic big-wave breaks in Hawaii. Known as the birthplace of big-wave surfing, Mākaha has hosted historic contests—including the Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic and numerous big-wave events when the surf reaches massive heights. During peak winter swells, waves can tower above 20 feet, drawing elite surfers, photographers, and spectators from around the world.
Spring & Fall: Consistent, Playful Conditions
During shoulder seasons, the surf mellows out while still offering consistent waves along the Leeward Coast. Mākaha, Māʻili, and Pōkaʻī Bay become ideal for intermediate surfers looking for clean, rideable conditions without the heavy winter crowds. These months often bring light winds and smooth morning surf.
Summer: Small Waves & Beginner-Friendly Spots
Summer brings south and southwest swells, creating smaller, more manageable waves perfect for learning.
Mā‘ili Beach and Pōka‘ī Bay offer gentle breaks ideal for beginners and longboarders.
Nānākuli and Kahe Point (Electric Beach) sometimes see fun, waist-high surf on the right summer swells.
